Gene was a breeder of the following horse breeds Appaloosa established in 1961, American Quarter Horse established 1958 and POA (Pony of the Americas) established in 1964.

In 2004 Gene was awarded South Dakota Horseman Of The Year. Later in 2006 he was Inducted into the PTHA Judges Hall of Fame. Gene also accomplished POA Honors, Hall of Fame and became a POA Diamond Premier Breeder, which only six breeders have achieved this in the history of the breed.

Not only was Gene well know with his breeding program, but was also involved with judging many horse shows around the globe. Major horse shows Gene judged included the following:
